Quentin Umphenour is an eighth-grade student at Jayhawk-Linn Junior High and has earned the right to compete in the Kansas Junior National History Day competition. He presented his monologue titled "Colonel William’s Response to Lincoln Sparked a Turning Point" at the District 2 National History competition at Fort Scott on March 2. From there, he was selected to move forward to compete in the Kansas contest to be held at Washburn University, Topeka, on April 20.
Quentin’s presentation was in keeping with the national theme of "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas and Events." Quentin’s solo performance character search led him to Col. James M. Williams. Quentin smiled and said, "I enjoy learning about history. I do speaking and reading for 4-H and I thought I’d try this. I started doing my research about four weeks ago."Want to read more?
