Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, which is May 12 this year. It is common today for mothers to be given gifts and receive special attention as a way to thank her for all she has done for loved ones. This special day was formed with good intentions but has had a tumultuous past.
Ancient rites held spiritual practices of celebrating goddesses and symbols of motherhood instead of a human mother. The earliest record of a society celebrating a mother deity was in ancient Egypt where a festival was held each year to honor Isis, the mother of the pharaohs.
