The first-ever World Turkey Hunting Championship was held in Linn County last week – featuring the best turkey hunters in the country with proceeds going toward getting wounded warriors into the woods and to the lake. And, as a bonus to those supporting the effort, American country music legend Toby Keith performed for the approximately 400 people invited to the private affair held at Clint Walker’s Wicked Outfitters location near La Cygne.
Kip West, chair of KWO (Keeping Warriors Outdoors), explained that the event began about a year ago when Walker was contacted to assist with the program. Eleven thousand five-hundred acres of prime Linn County and surrounding turkey hunting ground was leased so that 31 teams of two hunters, a "regulator" (judge) and a cameraman, could try to bag the biggest turkey and win a $25,000 cash prize and gold ring.
