MOUND CITY The opening video presentation, "Some Gave All," set the tone. Infants, grandparents, parents and students alike were mesmerized by the bittersweet words sung by Billy Ray Cyrus. Not everyone in the stands has had to fight for our nation’s freedom, but the evidence is clear that everyone appreciates those who have "stood true for the red, white and blue…." Students at USD 346 of all ages seemed to understand the importance of this celebration; you could have heard a pin drop throughout the majority of the forty-five minute presentation. The Jayhawk band, under the direction of the Mr. Ryan Nichols, could not have echoed the national anthem any louder throughout the gymnasium. Lips moved to the words of the famous song that represents what our nation’s freedom stands for. Jayhawk-Linn was privileged to have representation from many age groups of veterans, including Raymond Poole and Fred Clearwater, both World War II Veterans. Mr. Clearwater stated his feelings about the annual celebration, "I enjoyed it. I truly enjoyed it. The kids did too, and I do feel that all the students understand why we celebrate Veterans Day." Although not one person in attendance at Jayhawk-Linn High School on Nov. 11, 2009, was actively involved during "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" the year of 1918, everyone in attendance at Jayhawk-Linn High School did find it important to reflect and remember all who have fought throughout the ages to make this country the "land of the free and the home of the brave." |
