Mound City's Johnson wins calf roping
MOUND CITY - Rodeo fans certainly got their money's worth at both performances at 2009 Linn County Fair and Rodeo last weekend. The rough stock (bucking) were rough, the timed events were quick, the clown was funny, the cowboys were handsome and the cowgirls were pretty. They got to see a Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) Barrel Racing Champion perform, and a local cowboy win the tie-down calf roping competition. Plus, they witnessed performances by Frontier Rodeo-owned Plummer Bulls that simply dominated the cowboys straddling their backs. Not one competitor was able to stay aboard for the eight seconds required to score points from the two judges, a common occurrence when the strong, athletic Plummer bulls leave the bucking chutes. Mound City's Trenton Johnson won the calf roping competition for the two nights by tying his calf in nine seconds. Cole Wilson, Kincaid, Kan., a familiar name to area roping fans, took second with a time of 10.7; Graig Marsolf, Fall River, Kan., took third and Jerome Schneeberger, Ponca City, Okla., finished fourth. Fort Scott's Jared Keylon won the bareback event, 85 points; Bo Casper, Fort Scott, second, 83; Luke West, Fort Scott, third, 80; Scotty Harman, Norcatur, Kan. fourth, 79. Dennard Butler, Muskogee, Okla., took top honors in steer wrestling, (4.5) in a tie with Manhattan's Chancey Larson; Marty Musil, Gurthrie, Okla., took third (4.9); Daniel Adams, Weatherford, Okla., finished fourth, 5.0. A Doniphan Neb. cowboy, Casey McGooden, won top honors in saddle bronc, 79; Fort Scott's Jordan Corrigan second, 76; Luke Rush, Clay Center, Kan., third, 74; Tyler West, Fort Scott, fourth, 73. There was a three-way tie for team roping honors. Adam Rose, Willard, Mo.,/Coffeyville's, Jake Long; Troy Kitchner, Liberty, Mo./Chad Mathes, Lawton, Mo.; Adam Stueve, Newton, Kan./Ralen Stueve, Park City, Kan., all tied their steer in 5.7 seconds to combine for first, second, third prize money. There was also a three-way tie for fourth. White City's Jeanne Anderson won the barrel racing competition in 17.63 seconds; Rachael Reichenberg, Hershey, Neb., took second, 17.84; PJ Burger, Pauls Valley, Okla. (WPRA Champion) took third, 17.89; Mary Burger, Pauls Valley, Okla., took fourth, 17.91. Total contestant prize money for the two nights was $15,052. One hundred and fifty-one cowboys and cowgirls from nine states (Oklahoma, Nebraska, Arkansas, Texas, Iowa, , Minnesota, Arizona, Missouri and Kansas) competed.
