RICHMOND, Kan. - "We saw lots of positive things," noted Jayhawk-Linn volleyball coach Christa Holt after the Lady Hawks' 2-1 performance at Central Heights last week.

Holt noted that the opening season home tournament gave her some things to work on with the young team and that last week's matches proved that the Lady Hawks worked some of those out, "Our serves were much better and our transition from defense to offense was much improved."

The Hawks opened the night with a 25-23, 25-17 win over Kansas City Metro Academy.

In that match, Taylor Dawson, Jessie McGown and Morgan Eastwood scored two aces each.

Chelsea Beckman scored one ace.

McGown recorded six assists; Beckman, eight from their setter position in the match.

Dawson had six kills against Metro; Emma Hargrove, four; Eastwood, three; Beckman, three.

The Hawks ran up 29 service-receive points in the win.

The Hawks faced Central Heights in their second match of the evening.

"The Lady Vikings are tough," noted Holt. "I felt that the score didn't reflect how well we played together against them."

The Lady Vikings, 11-1 as of this writing, took it to the Hawks, 25-8, 25-12.

The Hawks were simply unable to gain any advantage over their Pioneer League foes.

McGown recorded five assists; Beckman, two.

The team managed eight kills with Hargrove and Beckman getting two apiece; Eastwood, Amory Miller, Dawson and McGown recording one kill each.

Shelby Krull recorded three digs against the Lady Vikings; Jessica Walters, two.

"We still have some things to work on....consistency in hitting and back row transition," noted Holt.

Marmaton Valley [Moran] gave the Hawks a scare in the first set of the Hawks' third match of the night.

"We kind of lost our heads in the first set against Marmaton Valley," noted Holt of the 25-22 first set loss. "But we came back to beat them pretty soundly in the next two sets."

The Hawks won the match by beating Marmaton Valley 25-7, 25-13 in the final two sets.

Dawson recorded nine kills in the match; Beckman, four; Eastwood, three; Miller, three; Hargrove, three.

Dawson had a great match from the service line hitting for seven aces in the match.

Eastwood recorded three aces in the three-set match.

McGown had six assists; Beckman, seven against Marmaton Valley.

The Hawks travel to Oswego this weekend.

They have won that tournament the last two years.

"We are looking to go for our third win at Oswego," concluded Coach Holt.
