Shirley Akers, 75, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away peacefully at her home on July 8, 2016.
Shirley was born October 3, 1940, in Blue Mound, Kan., as one of five children to George and Nancy New.
After high school she married her sweetheart Richard Akers on July 21, 1958. Shirley worked as an electronics assembler for many years at Filtertronics, Bendix and Airport Systems. She loved finding treasures at flea markets and garage sales. She was a card shark who enjoyed playing with friends and family. She loved being active in her grandchildren’s activities.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Ruby, Georgia and Betty Davis (New); brother Albert (Buck); and son Rick.
She is survived by her husband, Richard, of 57 years; daughter Marla Mills (Brian); daughter-in-law Barbara Akers; and granddaughters Lauren, Jessica, Samantha Mills and Sarah Akers; and many family and friends.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 14, from 6–8 p.m. at McGilley Stateline Chapel. Funeral services will be Friday, 11 a.m. at the Chapel with graveside service at 1 p.m. at Curry Cemetery, Mound City, Kan.
